Review of Project with
Class

With this particular wiki, the students will be broken up
into groups of four (4). With these
groups a group leader will be selected from the group. After the group leader has been selected, the
group will come together and pick a topic that they wish to research from the
following topics:
- · OB/Gyn Emergencies
- · Trauma Emergencies
- · Respiratory Emergencies
- · Cardiac Emergencies
The goal of this project is to gain insight and knowledge of
a particular topic that an EMS employee may see on a typical duty day. With the presentation, the group must find
one individual outside of the classroom who currently or had experienced what
the group had selected to work on.
The overall Wiki project is worth 50 points. The deadline for this Wiki is going to be due
on December 12, 2013.
Evaluation: This
portion project is worth 20 points. Even
though it is worth 50 points, your participation is VITAL in order for the group’s
success. There will be two (2) grades
for this project, the first one, which is 2/3 of the grade will be individual participation. The remaining grade will be 1/3rd
of the grade it will consist of the group project participation. Your group members will evaluate all members
on that particular aspect of the grade.
Hence, it is important for you to be an active participant in the
group.
Wiki Content: This
portion is worth 30 points. In order to be successful, a minimum of seven
(7) sources are going to be required.
These sources must be a credible source such as books, journal
articles. Each item must be cited appropriately
utilizing APA 6th ed. Please
consider to use complete sentences and not abbreviations. The standard of medical abbreviations may not
be understood by the general public who also will be looking at your Wiki
webpage.
Wiki visual appeal and interactivity: This portion is worth 20 points. In with the addition of the course work the
use of graphic video aids, video and audio presentations work to bolster your
presentation. In addition to additional sources
such hyperlinks which will give the readers additional material to review. The additional material demonstrates to the
readers that the group had completed their work and that they have a full
understanding of the topic that was researched.
Hi John:
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful lesson plan. You completed it so quickly; I am just blown away by how you could put this document together so quickly and in such detail. I honestly am terrified about this requirement. I feel absolutely lost.
Is it okay for us to use Dr. K's outline as a template? Is that considered cheating? Plagiarism? BRG members, please advise.
Hi John:
DeleteMy panic attack is over. I called Dr. K on Tuesday and spoke to him directly about this assignment. We brain stormed a couple of ideas. This was a good this for me to do with him because I realized that I did not have to come up with an elaborate, detailed, and extensive lesson plan. The focus/aim of this learning activity is how to utilize a wiki in a collaborative manner with will act as a team building platform that will promote high-ordered thinking, positive interdependence, and trust among team members. I hope the 8 week lesson plan I posted conveys the above intent.
~Aja
Hi Aja. I looked at some of the examples that he provided and went from there. The 8 week lesson plan was the goal however, there was no set description on how many sessions is in that class plan. I utilized my own class that is being taught right now and changed it around to accommodate the wiki.
DeleteHi John:
ReplyDeleteYou created a wonderful 8 week lesson plan. I noticed that everyone has included a matrix grid with information. Oops!! I did not include one in my initial post. I guess I have to go back and revise my post to include one. I am beginning to feel stressed again. Wish me well!
~Aja
John:
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned above that this is a current class, are you actually doing this in your current class? If so, how is it going? If not, do you think you will next time? I love your whole blog site!! Thanks for posting early as well, because I utilized your example to help me rationalize my own. I learned so much in this lesson by looking at others and I thought this was a great assignment, as this is not my strength, so I was way out of my comfort zone :)
Annie
Annie,
ReplyDeleteI used my current class schedule as a guide for this project. I didn't know how to exactly use it so I went ahead and just did it as a 2 day a week project. I am not currently using the Wiki in my course but I am seriously considering using part of it in the upcoming spring semester if I can make time for it in my class since we are a strictly face to face class. The students have to write a report on a topic that they encounter while doing an observation at one of our local trauma centers here in the KC area.
I am glad that I was able to help someone out by putting this up early. It took me like 6 hours on Monday to do it. I was afraid that I didn't put enough information on the format for this assignment or that I put too much information on it.
Nice lesson plan! It reads very much like a syllabus and I thought was very appropriate how you addressed and encouraged participation in the evaluation section. West and West (2009) state, “Student preparation for wiki work should begin well before the first day of online course. Preparation includes managing student expectations, stimulating relevant skills and attitudes, and orienting students to the new learning environment” (p. 30). Communication with the learners to outline expectations early is key to success when implementing a new technology into the classroom. You also did a nice job of making space in your plan to orient your learners to the new environment. I see several lesson plans in your course schedule that cover Wiki skills. If I had to guess, I would bet that, as an instructor, you are very in-tune with your students.
ReplyDeleteQuick question regarding the objectives, what skills do you hope your students will learn/construct as a result of the wiki?
